Karen Lee Dotson (Kirk) died suddenly on Sunday, May 14, 1972, in Nebraska City, NE. Karen taught English in Weeping Water and Norris schools. At the time of her death, Karen was an intern who taught two sections of sophomore English at Lincoln East High School. Karen also worked with the sophomore spirit club. Upon learning of Karen’s death, East High Principal James Huge told the faculty, “Karen was a warm, friendly, caring human being who liked nothing more than helping others.” He added, “A candle’s light is not measured in how long it burns, but rather, how much light it gives. So, it is with life. Karen’s candle burns very bright indeed.” Just days before her death, Karen learned that she would move to a position at Lincoln Southeast High School, where she would become a colleague of Mary Commers.

Karen Dotson (Kirk) was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

Survivors included husband Tom Kirk; parents Mr. and Mrs. Loren Dotson of Lincoln; brothers Dr. Larry Dotson, Albany, CA; Randal Dotson, Lincoln; and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. William Nelson of Lincoln.
