In Memory

Lana Eden

Lana Eden was a member of the LSE Class of 1965. Lana is still remembered fondly by those of us with whom she attended College View (now Calvert) Grade School. It is believed that Lana one of a relatively small group of students whose junior high years were spent at Lincoln Southeast. Lana started high school with the Class of 1965. She was killed in a car accident on June 1, 1963 at the close of our sophomore year. She did not graduate with us, but in our minds she was still our classmate. I have a great memory related to Lana and her family. I went to Calvert grade school andI lived about a mile from the Edens home.(I believe she had 3 sisters). There home was apparently a farm home prior to College View expanding around it. It had a large lot and a barn at the back of the lot. (This is where the memories kick in)

Her dad had installed a cable from the hay loft across the yard to a tree near the front street. He had filled a burlap bag with hay and attached the bag with small wheels (rollers) to the cable. You went up to the loft and wrapped your legs around the bag, held on and rode it (fast) to the tree. No brakes,no helmet and no way to stop.

They called the ride....The zoom zoom !!!

This was probably the first "Zip line" long before they became popular.  Anyone else ride the Zoom Zoom ?

Gretchen Garlinghouse and I used to live 1 house apart and spent happy times getting on a sack swing my dad put in the backyard on a giant elm tree.  You had to climb the swing to jump off.  It broke once with my sister and I on and we flew over our unattached garage with no injuries.  I saw Gretchen on the internet giving her farewell address at the art school where she has taught for many years.  I choked up with her--very moving.  John Hall

Hello, all. First let me thank Susie, Sherri and Steve for their comments about Lana Eden. I have good and sad memories of Lana. She was a friend. Lana and i alway "hit it off" pretty nice. She was alway polite enough to laugh at my dumb jokes in Grace Reiffs class. I do remember that Lana invited me to a party at their home on Eden Circle. (quite possible a 9th grade graduation party.) We shared soda, snacks and music and I got a few dances with Lana. Then came the accident a year later. I was completely overwhelmed as I had never experinced the loss of a classmate. I went out on the porch of my parents home and just sat for a long time just remembering. Something told me to cut out the article of the accident and keep it. I still have it today. I think about Lana from time to time and remember the good times. We still had classes to attend before the close of the semester and on Monday we all about "lost it" including Grace Rieff, viewing the empty desk that was Lana's. I add continuous thoughts and prayers to Lynn Edwards who will probably be haunted by that night forever. Those of you who are still "toting" around the '63 Shield, there is a great picture of Lana and John Tisdale in a height comparison photo at a student locker on pg. 70. Gone but not forgotten. Lana and I started school together at College View Elementary, went on to Southeast Jr. High and finally made it to Southeast High School.  Oh how excited we were that for the first time, Southeast was only a High School and we were the first class (no more underclassmen to deal with).  I too  was a member of the zip line crew who visited Lana's house.  There was always something going on there and her sisters were always around to add to the fun.  I think Lynn Eden was around the most.

The most haunting memory I have is when I went to get my driver's license, there was a lady in front of me who turned and asked me if I was there for my permit or license.  When I looked into her face, it was  Mrs. Eden.  She had a very sad look on her face and quietly said "be very, very careful". and she turned and left.  I will never forget the sad look and knew she carried so much pain.

So here is to all the happy times, the fond memories and my friend Lana.  You will not be forgotten
