Vicki Herzog

On March 10, 2018, Vicki Herzog passed away at her home in Elkhorn, NE two months after having been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. She lived near Bloomfield, NE for most of her adult life but maintained dual residences in Elkhorn and Bloomfield for the past five years.

Vicki Lee Evans was born on August 18, 1947 in Lincoln, NE to Marvin and Lora (Dickerson) Evans. She graduated from Lincoln Southeast High School in 1965 and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1968 with a degree in Elementary Education. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. While at UNL, she met her future husband Jim Herzog. Vicki and Jim were married on July 13, 1969. While Jim was in the army, they lived at Fort Knox, Kentucky and Fort Riley, Kansas. Their oldest daughter Amy was born during this time.

In 1971 Vicki and Jim returned to the Bloomfield area and worked in the farming and cattle feeding business with Ed and Zi Herzog on the family farm northeast of Bloomfield where Jim grew up. In Bloomfield Vicki and Jim had two more daughters --- Jennifer and Claire. Over the years, they significantly expanded H&H Cattle Co. Vicki was an integral part of the family business, for which she worked in the office, managed employee housing and cooked excellent meals for several employees every day. In 2017 Jim and Vicki sold the feedlot operation and moved to Elkhorn.

Vicki was interested and active in local organizations. She was a member of Christ Memorial United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, led the children’s choir and developed their bell choir. She was also active in Today for Tomorrow (Young Women in Action). She organized the local style show for several times, and helped to raise funds for new equipment for the school playground and city park. She also served on the Bloomfield Community Schools Board of Education. Vicki was a generous person, who often provided anonymous assistance for those in need. Recently, Vicki became interested in helping and mentoring refugee families in the Omaha area. She enjoyed finding opportunities to use her teaching skills, gardening, collecting elephants, singing and playing piano, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include husband, Jim; daughters, Amy Mielak (John) of Lincoln, Jen Herzog (Craig Brown) of Omaha, and Claire Herzog (Seth Chisi) of Omaha; brother, Monte Evans (Jane) of Papillion; grandchildren, Evan, Grant, and Elise Mielak, Ava and Miles Brown, Caleb Chisi; and special family friends, Luka Thor, Nyadeny Chuol and their family.
